Get Noticed! but Get Evaluated

Get Noticed but Get Evaluated!

I work with hundreds of prospective college players a year and the big theme that everyone has is how to get more exposure.  Helping kids get placed into colleges for over 10 years, you find it’s not complete rocket science.  You can do it yourself with info found online, but you can also change your car engine with info found online.  The latter is tedious and probably not worth all the time and effort to really just end up in the same place.  Before anyone goes off on the journey to become the next great NCAA player, please start with some self awareness.  This can be a tough pill to swallow if you are not getting recruited by LSU as a sophomore and that’s what you feel you deserve.  If you are a high school player, there are plenty of ways to go get evaluated to see where you belong in the stack.  Mind you underclassmen have a long way to go typically and they will be judged on some basic body type skill and actions.  It’s more of a projectability with an underclass guy, but a good exercise nonetheless as you have some time to develop.  Upperclassmen need to get an honest evaluation of where you are at and where you have a chance to play.  There are lots of opportunities out there for the kids that does want to go play.  I’ll touch on this but not dwell on it today, make sure your grades are in check and you have gone to the NCAA Eligibility Center.

Where to get an good evaluation:

  • Pay an area scout to take a look.  He might have time to do something like this and will give you the facts.  You can find your area guy in the MLB directory.  He will also be unbiased a unlike a high school or travel ball coach.  He can also tell you why he thinks your skills are college level or not.
  • Go to a Prospect Camp of a school you would like to attend.  The coaching staff will give you an honest answer as they don't want to keep getting your emails if you are not a fit.  If you are a fit or if they see you as a college player, you will know from them as theses events are fundraisers at times, but they also weed players out in their own recruiting process.  A D1 may think you are a D3 player and so forth, at least it will be an honest answer.
  • Skills video to a reputable source.  The internet is a wild wild west, but there are guys like me out there that will check your video out and give an opinion.  Remember this is only one guy's opinion.  Be realistic about where it might be able to go.  If you got cut from your high school team, it’s not a death sentence but SEC schools may be a very long shot.  Check Twiter for coaches that do a lot of work online.  You can start with mine, lots of good dudes there.
  • Showcase event.  There are good ones and there are bad ones.  I like the ones with college coaches doing the evals.  They are there to get paid and give their expertise.  Not to take some trust fund kid because he worked a weekend camp.  If a coach likes you, he has the roster there.  He will also tell you where you fit college wise.  I highly recommend the Trosky Events as his fit this criteria and the instruction is very good, yes I work with them and would do it for free.

Keep in mind to be realistic about your grades and schools you want to attend.  Make sure you also are in check about your skills.  Getting an eval may show that you are better than you ever thought and now the pedal really needs to get on the gas..
