Jerry Brewer - Hitting Instructor
Who I am
My name is Jerry Brewer and I am the instructor for East Bay Hitting Instruction. My baseball playing background is fairly modest. I achieved reasonable success in high school baseball and have since played in adult leagues. During my playing time, I was neither the best or worst hitter on any team. I was curious about what separates average hitters from good hitters, good hitters from great hitters, and great hitters from elite hitters. In short, elite hitters swing the bat and/or have better movement quality than the rest of us. |
Elite hitters are no different than elite performers in any other discipline. The top piano players, swimmers, pitchers, race car drivers, even poker players have honed perfect mechanics in their perspective field to reach the highest level performance. Instructors teach these elite mechanics for musicians and swimmers, and they can be taught for hitting.
Frustrated I couldn’t hit like big leaguers, I set out to determine what separates the elite hitters from the ordinary. After several years of detailed analysis of how the best hitters swing the bat, I have developed a structure for implementing correct swing mechanics with improved athletic development in students. The structure is
What I teach
Put simply, I aim to achieve optimal swing mechanics by improving movement function. Proper mechanics allow hitters to swing the bat quickly and powerfully, and to adjust to a variety of pitch speeds and locations. Key elements of these mechanics include
How I teach
The format of hitting instruction may be different than you might expect. I teach in a structure borrowed from the most effective teachers in areas such as swimming and martial arts. Instruction starts with a series of drills to teach the body to be able to perform hitting movements quickly. Then the hitters work on a guided lesson through tee work, front toss, then finally “live” pitching. Swings are recorded for analysis. Students can see their swings from each practice session, compare themselves to elite hitters, and work to improve their swings with quantifiable results.
My guarantee
I have helped hitters from high school, college, and pro level improve their swings. My guarantee is your swing will improve with my instruction.

The structure is
- based on hundreds of hours of video analysis of elite hitters
- based on a professional background in engineering and applied physics
- based on individual assessment of how hitters move
- consistent with latest developments in athletic movement (I am a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist of NSCA)
- based on quantifiable assessments from swing video
What I teach
Put simply, I aim to achieve optimal swing mechanics by improving movement function. Proper mechanics allow hitters to swing the bat quickly and powerfully, and to adjust to a variety of pitch speeds and locations. Key elements of these mechanics include
- Proper body alignment
- The role of the stride
- Transition from stride to bat swing
- Optimal bat path
